Cobweb origami valentines are a special genre of letter art which started in the 19th century primarily in Britain before the arrival of the universal postal system, envelopes and greeting cards. These elaborate cobweb origami valentine letters are usually decorated with paper lace, scrap pictures, origami pockets (cut & painted with flowers in watercolour). Inside the pockets, they contain decorated paper cobwebs (Cupid’s webs) and throughout the letter, verse, poem and love notes are handwritten as a part of the overall composition. They are then folded to become envelopes and seal wax is then applied on the back and then the letters are hand delivered to the lucky addressees.
I was inspired by the antique original examples residing in museum libraries and decided to revive this beautiful letter art from the bygone era. I continue to experiment and expand on the idea of creating new floral designs of my own. Each Valentine takes about a few days to make and I use my own or other delicate marbled paper for making the cobwebs. Each valentine is painstakingly handmade and illustrated with original watercolour. The content and dedication are also customized. I am sure these original works of art will become the treasured keepsakes of tomorrow. You can email me at studioRobertWu@gmail.com for special commissions.
